DISASTER RECOVERY & BUSINESS
CONTINUITY PLANNING
Question:
If I install a BTI Observer Monitoring System,
do I still need Disaster Recovery (DR).
Answer:
Yes. The BTI Observer Monitoring System will complement your DR
plan but will not replace it.
A Disaster Recovery or Business Continuity Plan (BCP) is designed
to be a lifeline for the business if a serious problem occurs. i.e.
fire, flood, multiple system failure etc.
It enables the business to continue operating during the recovery
phase. This can be anything from replacement systems being supplied,
or temporary buildings being provided on site, to complete relocation
to the DR company's standby office facilities.
BTI's Observer Monitoring System is the early warning of potential
issues, that if ignored would escalate into one of the above serious
problems.
If the air conditioning fails and the temperature starts to rise,
it's much better to fix the problem at that stage rather than wait
for it to affect system operation and have to invoke your DR plan,
which will result in cost, disruption and inconvenience.
If you know straight away about fluctuations in the environment,
the small water leak, the slow rise in temperature you have the
opportunity to prevent it escalating from minor disruption to a
full-scale business disaster.
When the Bishopgate bomb exploded in London, companies in the exclusion
zone were not allowed back into their offices for three days. These
were buildings un-affected by the bomb but within the security cordon.
IT staff at one of BTI's clients could access the computer systems
remotely but still needed to know if disruption to utility supplies
was affecting their IT environment.
The BTI Observer gave them this piece of mind.
BTI Observer = Prevention
Disaster Recovery = Cure
